Summary expansion
Included are Paul III's bull, "Regimini militantis ecclesiae" dated Sept. 27, 1540, which limited the number of members to 60; Paul III's bull "Injunctum nobis" dated March 15, 1543 which annulled the restriction on numbers, and a bull of 1550 issued by Julius III who reconfirmed the Society. The bulls of Paul III were especially important in permitting the Jesuits to draw up and alter their statutes, exempting them from ecclesiastical offices, and from acting as directors or confessors in convents (thus preventing any drain of the best members away from the Society), and encouraging the beginnings of their educational work. All seven documents fall within the lifetime of the founder, Ignatius of Loyola, and the last of them, dated 1552, is addressed to Loyola personally
