Summary expansion
Although the manuscript was never published, it served as the inspiration and precursor to Crane's "Pothooks & Perseverance," published in London by Marcus Ward & Co., in 1886, No. 3 in the series "Walter Crane's new series of picture books." The manuscript takes the form of a mock-up book, with illustrated cover and title-page, complete with series information and imprint; two sample endpapers, featuring a blue-on-blue alphabet design; and 12 illustrated leaves of text. The central character is a little boy, initially called Lionel, but then re-named "Percy Vere" or "Percy Verance, as noted in the author's pencil notes in margin. Percy takes his first steps, up the library ladder, to the country of copy books, where he studies the alphabet and geography. He sails in a paper ship to the Black Sea, tries to hook a fish with a quill, and tumbles into a sea of ink. The rest of Lionel/Percy's escapades all involve encounters with letters of the alphabet and "capitals." "The world of letters is now before him. We will wish him a good voyage." Throughout the mock-up, Crane's pencil edits appear in the margins
