Summary
Treatise by the young Florentine humanist, Matteo Palmieri, on the qualities which a good citizen ought to possess, written in the form of a dialogue between Agnolo Pandolfini, and his two interlocutors, Francesco Sacchetti and Luigi Guicciardini, which took place in 1439 in the town of Mugello near Florence, where the three had taken refuge from the Florentine plague of 1430. The dialogue is arranged in four books: the first deals with the importance of a liberal education in the formation of a worthy citizen, the second with the cardinal virtues needed, and the third and fourth with the practical aspects of these virtues, especially integrity, prudence, modesty, and justice. Palmieri was the first writer to advocate a proportional theory of taxation
