Summary expansion
From internal evidence, it appears that the work circulated in manuscript during Lucrezia's lifetime (1480-1519), and was only published 8 years after her death. Lucrezia's reputation for sexual or criminal infamy has been shown to be grossly exaggerated if not altogether false; in fact, she seems to have been conventionally devout throughout her life, being especially close to the nuns of Corpus Domini in Ferrara where she is buried (see Gabriella Zarri, La religione di Lucrezia Borgia (Rome: Roma nel Rinascimento, 2006). According to her biographer Sarah Bradford, Lucrezia kept certain favorites among the clergy, including Father Meli, who, as the dedication to the present work notes, composed for her this guide to ascetic enlightenment; see Bradford's Lucrezia Borgia: life, love, and death in Renaissance Italy (London: Viking Press, 2004). Lucrezia directed the guide to be written in Italian so that it might also reach a wider audience. Meli's work describes the fall from the sublime, the possibility of redemption through Christ, and the ascent of the "scala di paradiso," which unites Earth with Heaven, through the four fundamental steps laid out on the title page
