Summary expansion
The letters are written by a woman who is not well educated, and are signed "Celia" or "Zima," a name used to preserve secrecy. Celia resents men who can go out when they please, while she is confined to her house. She feels joy when she receives her lover's letters, suspicious when he converses with other women, disbelief and anguish when he accuses her of indiscretion, sadness and disappointment during Carnival when no letter comes. Celia is a reader of "Palmerín," and signs herself "verdadera serva che di corazon ama." The Lettere were very popular and successful, despite condemnation by the Church. Celia's poetry appears in Tempio della divina signora Geronima Colonna d'Aragona (1568) and in the 18th-century anthology of women poets by Luisa Bergalli Gozzi
