Summary expansion
Although the recipient of Mannozzi's letter is not identified, the date and the context suggest that perhaps it was Cardinal Guido Bentivoglio. In 1627, Mannozzi received a commission from the Cardinal to decorate three rooms on the ground floor of the Palazzo Bentivoglio in Rome (now the Palazzo Pallavicini-Rospoigliosi) with frescoes of mythological scenes (see Treccani Dizionario Biografico online http://www.treccani.it/enciclopedia/giovanni-mannozzi_(Dizionario-Biografico)/) In his letter of May 1, 1627, Mannozzi is requesting that he be paid in full for his work; he has received only 229 scudi of the 400 he was promised, and says he does not deserve the displeasure of his patron who he hopes will not go back on his word. He throws himself at the mercy of his patron, signing the letter "Giovanni Mannozzi da San Giovanni pittore orfanello ...derelicto abbandonato e senza balia."
