- Summary expansion
- At the time the letter was written, Ammannati was overseeing a project for Duke Cosimo I de' Medici to rework the structure of the Ponte a Mare bridge in Pisa, which entailed removing two of its arches and setting up support structures. Although Ammannati was the duke's court artist and architect, for this commission he put to use his skills in engineering and hydraulics, and served as project manager, overseeing ordering and transportation of materials, payment of accounts, and record-keeping, and coordinating communication among all parties involved, including proveditore Giovanni Caccini, to whom he refers in this letter to Busini. Ammannati is concerned with the costs and logistics of transporting pieces of marble for the rebuilding of the bridge, and timbers for the supports and scaffolding. He was also concerned with how water levels of the Arno might affect shipment of the materials, as he mentions fear of having the boats run aground--"perche si possono sempre arenare...." See Felicia Else, "Bartolomeo Ammannati: moving stones, managing waterways and building an empire for Duke Cosimo I de' Medici," Sixteenth century journal 42, no. 2 (Summer 2011): 393-425, based on Else's study of 56 Ammannati letters from 1562-1579 at the Getty Research Institute. http://search.getty.edu/gateway/search?dir=s&q=Letters+from+Bartolomeo+Ammannati%2C+1563-1578
