These appeared under the title Pontificum romanorum effigies, with the plates usually accompanied by a Latin text for the captions. The earliest such edition was issued in 1580, and included 230 portraits. The collection was reissued by Basa in 1585, and once again in 1591, always adding the required portrait or portraits on the election of a new pope prior to the date of publication
