Summary expansion
"Paris la nuit"--Paris at night--presents more than 200 tinted and black-and-white half-tone photographs of beautiful women--actresses and entertainers--and scenes of the nightlife of "Gay Paris" during La Belle Epoque, taken by well-known photographers of the day, particularly the Reutlinger photography studio, Atelier Reutlinger, managed at this time by Léopold Reutlinger, nephew of founder Charles Reutlinger; Professeur Stebbing; E. Lagrange, Paul Boyer, Charles Ogerau, and Félix Nadar. The album opens with a scene backstage at the Theatre des Variétés, just before the curtain goes up, entitled "Avant les trois coups," and closes with "Le Lever," portraying a young women in her nightdress rising from her bed in the morning. There are numerous other photographs documenting backstage activities at the theater, and actresses waiting in the wings, and sitting in their dressing rooms putting on costumes and make-up, and hundreds of photos of famous actresses and performers, with captions in French identifying each person, and description of the scene. Other photos capture the excitement and vivacity of Parisian nightlife with views of the Jardin du Bal Bullier, a ballroom created by Francois Bullier in the mid-19th century; the Moulin Rouge cabaret in Montmartre; the gallery and lobby of the Folies Bergères music hall at midnight; the Casino de Paris music hall; the main salon of the Café Americain; and a boulevard scene from the outdoor cafe of the Café de la Paix
