Summary expansion
This collection of 325 letters, was first printed by Francesco Marcolini in January 1538, and five other editions appeared the same year. Aretino's decision to collect his letters from the past for publication coincided with the arrival in Venice of Nicolò Franco, who assisted Aretino with the editing of this first volume. The explosive success of this first book of letters encouraged him to publish other volumes, the number of which grew to six over a 20-year period, numbering over 3000 letters. The letters touch on all walks of life, especially Renaissance Venice, art (including letters to Michelangelo, Vasari, Tribolo, Tiziano, Sansovino), litterature (with letters to Paolo Manuzio, Bernardo Tasso, Lodovico Dolce, Benedetto Varchi), good food, wine and company; many are petitions for money and protection, others are elaborate letters of gratitude for gifts received. On Aretino's invention of the genre, see Amadeo Qondam, ed., Le "carte messaggiere:" retorica e modelli di comunicazione epistolare. Roma: Bulzoni, 1981, pages 38-49
