  • A collection of studies of various popes and cardinals, among whom are Leo X (pope from 1513-1521), who excommunicated Martin Luther, Clement VII (1523-1534), and Cardinals Reginald Pole (Archbishop of Canterbury under Queen Mary, and papal legate to the Council of Trent), and Jacopo Sadoleto (Humanist, moderate Catholic, and important advocate of reconciliation with the Protestants)
  • Caption title: Delle uite e fatti de' sommi pontefici e cardinali
  • According to Bongi, some copies of the 1567 edition are dated 1568 on title-page; see EDIT 16, CNCE 20425; Short-title catalogue of books printed in Italy and of Italian books printed in other countries from 1465 to 1600 now in the British Museum identifies the copies dated 1568 as a "reissue."

Spec. Coll. copy: later vellum boards; gold-stamped black leather spine labels with title "Garimberto. Vite de' papi" and imprint "Ven. Giolito 1567." Manuscript note on front endleaf stating that the "seconda parte" was never published, and signed "Co. S. Mazzacchelli," possibly the Dominican friar Carlo Gaetano Samuele Mazzuchelli, who took the name Friar Samuele Mazzuchelli after completing his novitiate. In 1828, he left Italy to work in the United States, in the Illinois-Iowa-Wisconsin area, where he spent the rest of his life. Purchase, Carlo Alberto Chiesa, 1996.
