The author was John Marra, a gunner's mate on the Resolution, whom Cook had picked up in Batavia. Marra tried to desert at Tahiti on May 14, 1774. The account was probably fabricated by "some literary person in the pay of the publisher Newbery," who included some factual material from Marra's private journal; see Hill collection of Pacific voyages...
