- The scenes are rendered in explicit detail in vibrant colors. As described on the British Museum website of past exhibitions, "Shunga: Sex and Pleasure in Japanese Art" (Oct. 3, 2013-Jan. 5, 2014), "shunga--literally 'spring pictures'--appealed to all classes in Japan for almost 300 years and to men and women alike. Frequently tender and humorous, they celebrate sexual pleasure in all its forms in brilliantly colored paintings and prints, culminating with beautiful and explicit works by iconic artists Utamaro, Hokusai, and Kunisade. Within Japan, shunga has continued to influence modern forms of art, including manga, anime, and Japanese tattoo art;" see http://www.britishmuseum.org/whats_on/exhibitions/shunga.aspx
