Summary
Sabellico's De exemplis (on the model of Valerius Maximum), left unfinished by the author's death in 1506, but completed--at Sabellico's request--by his one-time rival, Giovanni Battista Egnazio, who brought it out posthumously in 1507, and dedicated it to the doge of Venice, Lorenzo Lauredano. Cf. J.B. Ross, "Venetian schools and teachers ... a survey and study of Giovanni Battista Egnazio," Renaissance quarterly 29, no. 4 (Winter 1976), 538. Sabellico's Exempla is a sourcebook of readings, compiled from the great manuscripts and books he came in contact with during his years as librarian of the Bessarion collection (which later became the Biblioteca nazionale marciana). His book of excerpts is arranged in ten general headings, each covering 8-15 topics, with each entry designed to serve both readers and writers, giving information as well as witty allusions
