Summary expansion
This adaptation freely rewrites its Carolingian sources, adding material along the way to suit its contemporary urban Italian audience. The tale was originally intended to be sung by minstrels, and in its transition from oral to printed literature, generated a variety of texts, from four-leaf single-battle chapbooks, to the present 75-canto 26,000-line version. This romance of chivalry, which influenced Ariosto and Tasso, features blood feuds, sorcerers defying kings, animals performing supernatural feats, enchantments, superstitions, bed-hopping sex, and the victory of arms, love, and faith
