Note
  • Volume of previously unpublished prose poems based on the poet's experiences while studying in Japan. For Young, "the prose poem is both supple and brazen, and it's subversive insofar as it doesn't look like a poem; the reader can be led to places he or she might ordinarily resist in a lined poem....I want my poems to move horizontally rather than vertically....;" see the poet's website http://www.gary-young.net/in_japan.html
  • Edition of 75 signed and numbered copies, with an additional 8 lettered hors commerce
  • "The type is Meridien with Neuland for the display printed on Japanese Kitakata. The foredges are painted by hand with walnut ink. The fly leaves are Kakishibu & the cover is Kyoseishi, both handmade in Japan. The design, presswork, & binding are by Carolee Campbell at Ninja Press in Sherman Oaks, California"--Colophon
  • The text paper is kitakata, handmade in Japan. Each faintly green text sheet is folded at the fore edge, then painted by hand with walnut ink. An ensō (empty circle) inhabits each page and is printed in a second color. The ensō is a brushed circular form common in Zen Buddhist art representing the ultimate Zen theme suggesting both emptiness and completion. The end sheets are kakishibu, a persimmon-washed, cinnamon-colored handmade Japanese paper. The persimmon wash acts as a tannin, rendering the paper both water-proof and insect-proof"--Printer's statement, laid in
  • Textured white wrappers composed of a double layer of kyoseishi or "strengthened paper." This handmade paper from Japan is coated with konnyaku juice, a form of starch derived from the konjac plant, also known as devil's tongue, voodoo lily, or snake palm. Konnyaku juice gives added strength and impermeability to the paper....sewn using black silk thread exposed near the spine"--Printer's statement, laid in
  • Issued in a clear acrylic slipcase
