  • Place and date of printing from colophon, which reads: "In Venetia per Domenico Giglio MDLIII."

  • Woodcuts: two architectural title-pages--one for Il Petrarca, the other for I trionfi--featuring medallion portraits of Petrarch and Laura (repeated from the 1549 ed. with Bernardino Daniello's commentary, printed in Venice by Pietro and Giovanni Maria Nicolini da Sabbio; cf. R. Mortimer, Italian 16th cent., no. 376); Giglio's device above colophon at end (urn, with monogram "D.G.F." supported by two fantastic creatures with horns, wings, and serpents' tails, below motto "Sic semper ero"); large (838 x 108 mm) woodcut illustrations at the head of each of the six "trionfi"; large white historiated initials, with some smaller ornamental initials (cf. Mortimer, no. 377)
  • "I trionfi" has special t.-p. with the same border, but with date MDLIII at foot, instead of printer's name

Coll. copy: dark blue morocco binding, double gilt filet; gilt-ruled spine panels, with gold-stamped spine title "Il Petrarcha"; inner gilt dentelles; all edges gilt over marbling; marbled endpapers. Ownership inscription, dated 1785, of Henry George Quin, noted collector whose choice collection of early continental printings, mainly classical and Italian literature, in fine bindings was bequeathed to Trinity College Dublin in 1805, on verso of front free endpaper; ms. note of former owner [?] at top of recto of second free endpaper, "Payne", identifying Roger Payne as binder. Purchase, A. Sokol, 1988.
