  • Unauthorized first ed. of Tasso's epic poem, Gerusalemme liberata, brought out in 1580 by Celio Malaspina with the title "Il Goffredo", containing parts of the poem which he had acquired in Florence while in the service of Francesco de' Medici. The first complete version was printed a year later, in 1581, as "Gerusalemme liberata", edited by Angelo Ingegneri. The present volume comprises 14 complete "canti": I-X, XII and XIV; and 4 incomplete "canti": XI, XIII, XV, and XVI. Only the prose synopses of XI and XIII are given
  • Includes dedication to Venetian senator Giovanni Donato, signed by editor Celio Malaspina, and dated August 7, 1580 in Venice
  • Dedication in roman type; poem printed in italic type, in two columns
  • Woodcuts: first word of title within ornamental cartouche; title vignette of Hercules slaying the Hydra, encircled with motto "Nec tamen effugies", within ornamental cartouche; head-pieces; ornamental initials
  • Signatures: *2 A-P4 Q2
