Summary
One of the two earliest editions (Gryphius also published an ed. in 1533, in Lyon), of Sadoleto's great humanistic work on the nature of philosophy, and its relationship to education, which he considered a necessary precondition of moral life. He saw philosophy as the way to study all other sciences and disciplines, from grammar to music, a way to expand and humanize the student, and lead him to cultivate wisdom. Cf. W.H. Woodward. Studies in education during the age of the Renaissance, 1400-1600, p. 167-179
