  • Colophon has earlier imprint date: "In Venetia : Appresso Pietro de'Franceschi & nepoti, MDLXXIIII [1574]."
  • Signatures: [star]4 *-2*4 a-c4 A-2Z4 AAa-EEe4

  • Engravings: text illustrated with 42 double-paged plates of engraved etchings of maps of Gaul ("La Francia"), and Iberia ("Hispania"), encampments, battles, circumvallations of cities, and other illustrations of warfare and war machinery, after drawings by Palladio's sons, Leonida and Orazio. Their deaths in early 1572 deeply affected Palladio, who issued this book to commemorate them. Other drawings depict Caesar's bridge over the Rhine, trench formation of Caesar's encampment at Alesia, battles and sieges in various locations, including River Axona, Bribax, Alesia, Brundisium, and Alexandria. For additional description and background on Palladio's interest in military science and ancient warfare, greatly influenced by his years of study with Giangiorgio Trissino, cf. Nov. 2009 working paper "Palladio and Polybius' Histories" by Guido Beltramini, fellow at the Columbia University Italian Academy for Advanced Studies in America, available online
