The fiscal oppression of the d'Este family had reduced the once economically powerful city-state to virtual penury in the early 1580s

Bound in contemporary [?] vellum over paper boards; old manuscript spine title; mottled red edges. Seventeenth-century ownership inkstamp of the library of the Convento di San Francesco del Monte in Perugia, Italy ("Bibliothecae Montis Perusiae") on recto of leaf [2] of Il Goffredo, and on several other leaves throughout; printed booklabel on front pastedown of C.K. Ogden.
