Aldus. 1501." Red leather circular bookplate on front pastedown of Dudley C. Marjoribanks, 1st Baron Tweedmouth (1820-1894), stamped in gold with his crest, a lion's paw clutching an arrow; two additional bookplates on front endleaf: oval armorial bookplate of Charles George Milnes Gaskell, with his motto "Scio cui credidi;" and small printed booklabel of Templeton Crocker.
  • Spec. Coll. copy 2: Extra-illustrated copy, with added engraved portrait of the young Horace bound in following title page; engraving is signed AS (or SA). Bound in early 19th-century dark blue morocco, and decorated with a series of elaborate alternating gilt rolled and borders; "Renouard," name of previous owner, stamped at foot of upper cover; doublures of light brown mottled morocco with decorative gilt borders; all edges gilt; rose silk endleaves; a second front endleaf of vellum; pink silk ribbon marker; bound by Bradel l'Ainé, successor to his uncle, the fine binder Derome le Jeune; Bradel's ticket on verso of front endleaf. Armorial bookplate on front doublure of Arthur Atherley, with his motto "Pro patria;" two additional bookplates on front silk endleaf: oval gilt-stamped black leather bookplate of Estelle Doheny; and square bookplate of the Vernon family, featuring interlaced initials "WV", surmounted by a coronet, within a frame containing the motto "Vernon. semper viret", belonging to Dante scholar, George John Venables-Vernon, 5th Baron Vernon. In modern dark blue leather and beige cloth clamshell case; gold-stamped spine title "Horace. 1501." Purchased at Christie's October 17 sale for UCLA by E.P. Goldschmidt, 1988.
