- Summary expansion
- The album was probably compiled in 1883 as the cover indicates, to document a trip through Egypt, Palestine, Jerusalem, and Syria. The album opens and closes with photographs of Egypt by Pascal Sebah, who at one time had studios in both Constantinople and Cairo. The photographs included here portray the local people of the country in the milieu of their homes, shops, and fields. The first view is a row of houses looming up from a Cairo street, the brick of the lower stories laid in stripes of dark and light, the upper stories bristling with window bays covered with elaborately carved wooden grates. Other photos show Egyptians at work: a group of rug merchants displaying carpets in their shop; a parade of women filling their large water jars with water from the Nile; a water vendor going door-to-door, a large animal skin bag strapped to his shoulder; men using shadoufs to raise water from the Nile to irrigate the fields; a young boy astride a water buffalo; a group of Bishari men lounging on bales of cotton and bags of grain, perhaps waiting for a boat to ferry them down the Nile. In another Sebah photograph, a dancer and group of musicians entertain the bride and groom at an Arab wedding. There are also photos of sightseeing boats moored at Aswan; and several views of the Nile at Aswan and Luxor that reflect the importance of the river in the life of the people. Also of interest in a photograph of the soldiers of a Scottish regiment posing around and on top of the Sphinx. A series of portraits concludes the album: a camel driver posing with his white camel; a young woman with water jars; and two men smoking and playing a mancala game. Photographs by Antonio Beato, signed "A. Beato," provide views of the antiquities of Egypt, such as the Colossus of Ramesses, Colossi of Memnon, Temple of Amenhotep, and Ramesseum in Luxor; the great temple of Karnak; and the temples at Philae. Bonfils photographed the buildings and antiquities of Jaffa, Ramlah, Jerusalem, Beirut, and Baalbek (Lebanon--also known as Heliopolis in Roman times). Included are photos of the Tower of Forty Martyrs in Ramlah, the Jerusalem city walls and gates, tomb of Absalom, Garden of Gethsemane, Al-Aqsa Mosque, and Jews praying at the Wailing Wall, and in Baalbek, the Acropolis, temples, and Cyclopean or colossal stone walls, some blocks of which weigh 2000 tons. Bonfils also made photographic portraits of everyday people--a mysterious veiled woman, a man carrying loaves of bread, a young mother carrying her baby asleep on her back, three men, perhaps family members, sitting solemnly on rugs and cushions, perhaps having commissioned a business contract or letter from the young man in the center, who might be a professional letter writer
