Summary expansion
The two detailed lists explaining the abbreviations used in Roman inscriptions are by Probus, a 1st-century grammarian, and Petrus, Diaconus, an Italian chronicler, used for deciphering the often cryptic messages found on Classical and Post-Classical antiquities. Following are notes on Roman weights and measures by Demetrius Alabaldus, and the Venerable Bede's "De computo et loquela digitorum"--on computing and speaking with fingers--taken from his De temporum ratione liber, which describes finger symbols for numbers up to one hundred thousand. Also included are summaries of Roman laws, and transcriptions in Latin and Greek of ancient inscriptions
