Jeffers, "La Historia verdadera de la conquista de la Nueva España, de Bernal Díaz del Castillo: un estudio bibliográfico de las dos primeras ediciones" (available online), of the two "first" editions dated 1632, the one with the letterpress title page and lacking the extra chapter "CCXXII" [i.e. CCXII]) is a later, counterfeit edition; the one with engraved title page and the additional chapter is the true first edition

Spec. Coll. copy: 19th-century red morocco binding, signed on upper turn-in "Bound by W. Pratt for H. Stevens, 1871;" London bookseller and binder, William Pratt (active 1808-1871) worked with Henry Stevens, American bookseller, bibliographer, and publisher who moved to London in 1845 and as an expert on early voyages and travels to America, became the British Museum's agent for procuring books from the Americas (see correspondence between Pratt and Stevens in the Henry Stevens papers in Library Special Collections (Collection 801); both covers paneled in ruled and decorative gilt borders; gilt pomegranate corner-pieces; elaborate gilt spine panels; gold-stamped spine title "Bernal Diaz. Historia verdadera. Madrid 1632;" red, blue, and brown marbled endpapers; gilt floral dentalles; all edges gilt. Book label on front pastedown of lawyer and book collector Samuel Latham Mitchill Barlow of Glen Cove, New York, with his lion crest, without shelf-mark; below is bookplate of the University of California Southern Branch, identifying gift made in 1931 [?] in honor of John Fiske by a group of seven donors, including Seeley W. Mudd, George I. Cochran, Meyer Elsasser, Dr. John R. Haynes, William L. Honnold, James R. Martin, and Mrs. Joseph F. Sartori; Fiske's stamp in left margin of leaf [2] of first sequence, dated 1926.
