Although the town, which had remained Catholic and under the control of Spain, was reputed to be able to withstand any attacks, having the ability to flood the approaches of any hostile forces. The siege by 30,000 men, led by Frederick Henry, Prince of Orange (1584-1647), began on May 27, 1629, and the town was forced to capitulate on September 14, 1629

Text illustrated with two large folded plans of the fortifications and access points of Bois-le-Duc; two maps of the town; and five plans and drawings (3 double spreads) of individual forts, the rivers and dykes surrounding Bois-le-Duc, and a new type of fortification able to withstand canon shots, several signed by the Dutch-Polish printmaker Wilhem Hondius who also illustrated Adam Freitag's Architectura militaris nova et aucta, published in Leiden by B. & A. Elzevir in 1631
