Summary expansion
Arranged in twelve books, the account includes jumbled references, often without regard for chronology, to Old and New Testament themes, classical history, philology, and mythology. There are passages--often disjointed--on the life of Christ; and passages on Noah, Moses, Absalom, and St. Paul are juxtaposed with those on Odysseus, Hannibal, and Augustus. The section on famous, and not so famous, martyrs, is frequently punctuated with encomia of Pope Paul III, to whom the poem is dedicated, and digressions on such matters as the views of Thales and Heraclitus on the creation of the world
