Summary expansion
There follows an edition of Tertullian's Apologeticus adversus gentes, along with one of his sermons, with a separate collation and a short index and register, dated 9 Jan. 1502. The volume begins with a dedicatory preface written by the printer, dated 15 Jan. 1502. Tacuino was the first to pair these texts and was imitated by Petit in Paris and by Aldus in 1515. Lactantius was perhaps the most popular Latin apologist in the Renaissance. His defense of Christianity was appreciated for its reasonableness as well as for an unquestioned orthodoxy, a valuable feature in a Roman author

Spec. Coll. copy: bound in 18th-century three-quarters calf and speckled paper; gilt spine panels, with raised bands and label; edges stained red; red and blue pattern endpapers. Two scholarly early readers have added copious marginal annotations throughout; the clearer of the two hands predominates. This same student has suppled interlinear gloss in the first 40 pages of text, and a 37-page double-column "Index rerum ac vocum," far exceeding the printed indices in detail. His notes are occasionally quite long, with references to many Christian and classical names. Ownership inscription on title page: "Facultatis philosophica Vienna 1686." Purchase, Bennett Gilbert, 1991.
