- Summary
- Manuscript stockbook, written in Venice, 1600-ca. 1615 by Bernardo Giunta and his assistants, of the book inventory of the Giunta publishing house in Venice, which provides insight into the booktrade of the early 17th century.
- Language

- Extent
- [313] leaves
- Note
-
- Owner/authorship and initial date from leaf [4]: "Al nome de Dio a di p[ri]mo Marzo 1600. Questo libro si e de mi Bernardino Giunti libraro in Venetia."
- Layout: leaves arranged in sections, each marked with a vellum tag indicating a particular subject area; within these sections, alphabetical arrangement is facilitated with thumb tabs, cut in the outer margins and labelled with the appropriate filing letter
- Script: inventory entries listed on rectos and versos of leaves, in three distinct contemporary italic hands in brown ink, with pen decorations on some capitals. The first two hands are similar to those known to belong to Bernardo Giunta; the third--"dashed loopy, steeply slanted letters" --suggests the hand of an assistant, whose understanding of the Giunta inventory system was inferior; see Martin Lowry, "Book prices in Renaissance Venice: the stockbook of Bernardo Giunti." Los Angeles, Calif. : UCLA University Research Library Department of Special Collections, Occasional Papers 5, 1991, p. 19
- Binding: contemporary limp dark brown calf, with overlapping fore-edge flaps, sewn on three bands; blind-tooled triple fillet panels; blind-tooled fillets on spine; single vertical slit in leather near center of upper fore-edge and three vertical slits near center of lower fore-edge suggests earlier presence of a fastener, now lacking; diamond shapes and initials "A" and "N" (or "M") cut into upper cover. Three contemporary woodcut bookplates, one on inside upper cover, one on verso of leaf 313, and one removed from inside lower cover and laid in, feature the Giunta Florentine lily device, one hand colored in red; illustrated bookplate on inside upper cover of Giorgio Uzielli (1903-1984). In modern dark blue cloth covered clamshell box, lined with blue-striped paper; gold-stamped black spine label, with title "Aldus & Giunta Press. Inventory book. Venice, 1600."
- Provenance: sold by Thomas Thorpe in 1836 to Sir Thomas Phillipps, whose shelf-mark, "9009," appears in blue pencil on recto of leaf [1] (see Munby III:85, no. 164); this same shelf-mark was likely printed on the paper label now missing from spine; later owned by Giorgio Uzielli. Acquired by UCLA from H.P. Krause in May 1983

- The stock book, belonging to Bernardo Giunta, a member of the famous printer/bookseller family active in Venice between 1570 and 1627, lists the stock and prices of books for sale by Giunta, and notes Giunta's trade connections as well. Among the printer-publishers he deals with are Aldus Manutius (and heirs), Barezzo Barezzi, Giovanni Battista Ciotti, Sebastiano Combi, [Segno de la] Fontana, Francesco de' Franceschi (Senese), Giolito, Giunti, Giovanni Guerigli, Paolo and Roberto Meietti, Serena [Pietro and Vittore dei Ravani], Giovanni Battista Somasco, and Compagnia Minima. Some of the Aldines he has in stock include the Aristophanes of 1498, selling for 12 lire, the 1553 Aristoteles for 15 lire, a 10 v. set of Cicero from 1583, priced at 805 lire, a 1513 Plato for 20 lire, a 1509 Plutarch for 18 lire, and a 1499 Polifilo for 6 lire. The special arrangement of the Aldine titles indicates the esteem in which they were held. It is also interesting to note that many early, now famous, works issued by Aldus are still for sale. The stock book is arranged first by subject groups, such as "Umanita," "Filosophia," "Theologia," Medicina & Astrologia," "Legge" [legal works], "Libri Greci e Ebrei," and "Libri Rossi e Neri" [liturgical books], and then subdivided alphabetically and by format; each title includes its selling price, often in two currencies ("Lire" and "Soldi/Denari"). There are also four long alphabets of titles arranged by origin of printing, either place --such as Rome, Florence, or Germany--or printer; Venetian printers are accorded special treatment, and are listed separately
