Contents
pt. I. Gazetteer for Basutoland -- pt. II. A list of about a thousand names, of places in the Orange Free State, and other territories bordering upon Basutoland -- pt. III. Alphabetical list of farms, and other subdivisions of land, on the immediate boundary of Basutoland

23 x 36 cm.
Extent
[6], 346, 66, 11 leaves
Note
  • Spec. Coll. copy has several dated notes in the author's hand, most between 1964 to 1965; the latest date is "14.V.1965" on leaf [1]. A note dated 2 days previous to that, on a blank leaf between pt. II and pt. III, indicates the reason for the push for getting copies distributed: "Our old home The Anchorage; all 8 houses & 89% of our land; being summarily expropriated, it was found impossible to proceed".
  • Spec. Coll. copy has [27] blank leaves inserted at end: leaves [1]-[14] have the map of Basutoland cited in title (at scale of 4 miles to an inch) cut into parts and mounted on each leaf; leaf [15] has a folded copyflo reproduction of an early hand drawn surveyor's map of "Trans-Orange" (1845); leaves [16]-[17] are blank; on leaves [18]-[27] are mounted portraits (reproduced) and photographs of important native rulers in Basutoland, from 1845 to the late 1890s, hand-annotated with descriptive captions.
  • Spec. Coll. copy: no. 71/100. Originally a gift from the author ("For the University of California - R.W." on p. [4]); transferred from stacks in 2004. Brown embossed leatherette with post binding. Numerous mss. entries by author.
