Summary expansion
Marzio, sometimes referred to as Galeotto, was the quintessential late 15th-century humanist scholar who wandered Europe from court to court and university to university, writing and disputing on widely differing subjects, and whose "dangerous" philosophical views led to a number of appearances before the Inquisition. He dedicated the present work to Janos Vitez, archbishop of Estergom, the leading native humanist at the court of King Mathias Corvinus. Marzio had met the archbishop's nephew, Janos Czesmicei (Janus Pannonius) while the two of them were studying at Ferrara in the Scuola di Guarino da Verona. The two became close friends, and on the latter's return to Hungary in 1458, Marzio joined him at the court of Mathias Corvinus. Janos went on to become the first great Hungarian lyric poet, while his friend Marzio became librarian of the celebrated Biblioteca Corvina. His posthumously published biography of King Mathias (Vienna 1563) is a major source on the daily life of that great humanist court
