Spec. Coll. copy: complete, with final blank leaf. Bound in 16th-century dark brown calf; panelled in blind, with gilt fleur-de-lis corner-pieces; gold-stamped quotation from St. Jerome in two columns running vertically across upper board: "Grande vim obtinet vera dilectio;" small gilt lozenge centerpiece on lower cover; all edges gilt. Ownership inscription in red on rear pastedown of Etienne Charpin of Lyon: "Stephanus Charpin Iesu Christi seruus humilimus ac Lugd[uni] ecclesiae presbiter p[er]petuus." Bound in at front are 35 leaves of manuscript notes in Charpin's hand in red and black ink, with some capitals in red and others illuminated in gilt and red; one large initial "C" at beginning of text on recto of leaf [5], elaborately decorated in red, blue, brown, orange, green, ocher and maroon, cut from another text and affixed here; title "Sententiae quae secuntur ex diuersis sacram[en]torum libris excerptaesunt" lettered in gilt and ruled in red; manuscript pages have intersecting borders ruled in red, and marginal notes and numerous manicules (pointing hands); Charpin's notes continue on top of and verso of letterpress title page, and front and rear pastedowns. Bound in at back are two leaves of of manuscript music, arranged on 5-line staves in diamond-shaped notation; words in Latin begin "Benedicat te d[omi]n[u]s." Two bookplates on rear pastedown of Raoul Chandon de Briailles (1850-1908), historian and wine merchant, and founder of the Chandon de Briailles mark of champagne ("au Cte. Chandon de Briailles"); and his heir, Count Henry Chandon de Briailles (1898-1937) ("des livres de Mr. le Comte Henry Chandon de Briailles 1898-1937"). In modern beige and brown leather clamshell box lined with tan felt; gold-stamped spine title "Sauermann. Ad principes christianos. 1524" decorated with gilt fleur-de-lis. Purchase, E.K.
