Summary expansion
The album was prepared as a gift for a fellow traveler [?], as a souvenir of the voyage which begins in Marseilles, and follows a route through the Suez Canal, past Port Said, Ismailia, Suez, and Aden. There are also photographs of a side trip [?] to Egypt, with views of Alexandria, Cairo, Aswan, and the Nile River. The ship continues across the Arabian Sea to Colombo, Sri Lanka, and then goes on to Singapore, Saigon, Hong Kong, Shanghai (China), and Kobe (Japan), finally arriving in Yokohoma. Views are important tourist sites such as Place des Consuls and Pompey's Column in Alexandria and the lighthouse at Port Said. In the Suez Canal, there are photos of the ship, Kantara Station, Egyptian fruit sellers, a dredger, and camel caravans waiting for a ferry to take them across the canal. Photo No. 11 of Ismailia is signed "Zangaki," the firm of brothers George and Constantine Zangaki which had studios in Port Said and Cairo. Other prints in the album may also have been produced by the Zangakis, as they used to tour the length of the Nile in a horse-drawn darkroom van, capturing the beauty and mystery of Egyptian antiquities, street scenes and local people. The album includes photos of the baths in Ismailia, a typical Egyptian village near Cairo, marked by mud walls and palm trees; the domes and minarets of the Cairo skyline; a cluster of feluccas and other boats moored along the Nile at Aswan; and a group of crocodile hunters subduing an animal they have dragged from the Nile. Also present are a two-part panorama of Aden, and views of the cisterns at Aden; and in Colombo, the Mount Lavinia Hotel, straw thatch roofed river boats of the local Singhalese people, a village of thatched huts surrounded by palm trees, and a street scene in which some of the townspeople pose next to a large mule cart. In Saigon, the panoramic views give way to close-ups of a temple in the public gardens of the town, steamships moored in the harbor; and a Chinese village on the river near Saigon. In addition to a three-part panorama of Hong Kong, there are several views of Shanghai, including a Chinese junk, the English Club, the English Chuch, an open-air marketplace, and a tea-house. Of special interest are a scene in a Chinese court of justice, in which the accused prostrate themselves before the judge; a large paper dragon float used in New Year's processions; and passengers in sedan chairs and rickshaws. Also pictured are cotton workers spinning and weaving, and women working in a silk mill, reeling silk threads from the cocoons of silkworms. The album closes with views of Japan: panoramas of Kobe and Yokohama, the Nunobiki waterfall in Kobe, walkers on the Negishi villiage road leading towards Mississippi Bay, and finally, Mt. Fuji
