Summary
The discovery of gold in the valley of the Klondike took place in the summer of 1896. There had been a few gold finds in the Yukon Territory prior to this one, but none had been so spectacular. The richness of the gold found in the Klondike region was so great that in 1897, one of the greatest gold rushes in history began. Almost overnight Dawson became a city of 10,000 people, and from the richer creeks, such as Bonanza and Eldorado, fortunes were made. The gold production in the Yukon territory reached its maximum in 1900. The literature relating to the Klondike is voluminous; in1897 over 20 books descriptive of the Klondike were published; this title is one of the early and important first-hand descriptions of the rush to gold in the Yukon
