Note
  • Construction: roll consists of two strips of parchment, probably goatskin, stitched together with parchment thong; the length of the scroll was often equal to the height of the sick person seeking a cure or protection. Upper end of scroll cut in arrowhead shape, with hemp string loop attached so that at night the scroll could be hung from a house post or wall to prevent evil spirits from entering. Roll was probably kept tightly rolled in a tubular case (now lacking) which could be worn around the owner's neck as an amulet
  • Illustrations: upper strip illustrated with drawing of the guardian archangel Michael with drawn sword, in the style typical for this kind of magic scroll; text interspersed with two drawn and painted talismanic "devil catcher" images in geometric form meant to ensnare evil spirits, painted in bright pink and blue and outlined in black. One image consists of a grid of six squares, of which three contain a double line "X" figure, and three contain elements of a face: eyes, nose and mouth; in Ethiopian talismanic art, eyes are important as the means through which demons depart from the body
  • Script: Written in Geʻez, the liturgical language of Coptic Christians in Ethiopia, in Ethiopic script, with prayers written in carbon black ink, and names of the holy Trinity and headings written in red ink.
