The text for this pocket atlas was written by Michel Coignet, and a new series of copperplates for the engraved maps was cut by Ambrosius and Ferdinand Arsenius. In 1604, Jan Baptist Vrients acquired the plates, and produced all subsequent issues; see Burden and Karrow

Spec. Coll. copy: imperfect, title-page and final blank leaf wanting; title and imprint supplied from R. W. Karrow, Mapmakers of the sixteenth century and their maps, p. 13. Contemporary [?] limp vellum binding; fragments of ms. text on front turn-in suggest that a piece of manuscript waste was re-purposed for the binding; two pairs of sewing holes along fore-edges, suggest earlier presence of leather [?] ties; old ms. cover title "Ortelius. Epitome Orbis Terrarum 1601." From the library of the French cardinal and statesman, Guillaume Dubois, which had formally been owned by Abbé Bignon, royal librarian at the Bibliothèque Nationale; ms. note in French on front endpaper provides details of the 1725 sale following Dubois' death: "Vente de la bibliotheque du Cardinal Dubois, 1725. Vendu 2-10, no. 3238 du catalogue." In modern tan cloth phase box; in black leather and gray marbled paper slipcase, with gold-stamped case title "Ortelius. Epitome Theatri orbis terrarum. 1601."
