Summary expansion
Of this original work, only Books I-X and XXI-XLV are extant. Also included in this edition is the Epitome, consisting of short abstracts of each book. Livy's purpose--an ethical one-- was to commemorate the deeds of the Roman empire, to describe the men and mode of life that had raised Rome to greatness, and to explain the decline of morals which brought about the troubles of the first century B.C. Minuziano's edition of Livy is based on Bussi's for Sweynheym and Pannartz, but Minuziano's dedication and colophon highlighted his concern for producing a corrected edition by means of collation with manuscripts. Minuziano tells the dedicatee, Bartolomeo Calco, chancellor and librarian of Ludovico il Moro, that he has been able to restore some fifty lines previously missing from Book XXVI of Livy. These are marked, he wrote, by a "veru" (dart) and "stella" (star), and in fact, at the place in question on leaf i2, an arrow and star are printed in the margin
