Note
  • Nannini's version was originally published in 1567
  • Signatures: [dagger]4 A-Z8 Aa-Qq8 Rr4
  • Engravings, unsigned, but undoubtedly from the studio of Giacomo Franco: engraved architectural title-page, featuring figures of the four Evangelists, Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John, with their symbolic animals; in the center is a small tower, with motto "Turris et fortitudo mihi Deus;" text illustrated with 50 full-page engravings of scenes from the life of Christ
  • Woodcuts: head-pieces; initials
  • Text printed in roman and italic types
  • Includes index
  • The Galignani brothers took over the privilege of printing Nannini's vernacular translation of the Epistles and Gospels from the Giolitos in 1599. Between 1575 and the termination of their privilege in 1598, the Giolitos printed various editions, illustrated with woodcuts of no particular note . The Galignanis, however, had a reputation for fine book illustration, and the engravings created for them by Venetian artist, Giacomo Franco, exhibit a dramatic vigor completely lacking in the Giolito woodcuts
  • Not in BM STC Italian, 1465-1600, Adams, or NUC
Dimensions
21 cm (4to)
Extent
[8], 519, [i.e. 619], [13] p.

Spec. Coll. copy: contemporary limp vellum binding, with scribal lettering on the spine. Front end leaf contains ownership inscription of Charles, comte de Moüy, dated 1888 in Rome, and his library label bearing shelf-mark in pen; a later note by the count on front pastedown, dated 1907, stating that he acquired the book in Rome in 1888 while serving as the French ambassador to Italy.
