Pomarancio was a noted Roman painter who executed many frescoes and altarpieces in the Roman mannerist style of the late 16th century, distinguished by rhythmic spacing in frescoes and realism of textures and details. Cavalieri's plates, depicting English martyrs from Alban to Thomas More and Edmund Campion, were executed in his typical style, in which he first etched the image and then finished it with the burin

  • Engraved architectural title-page (not included in plate count), featuring a large ornamental oval title cartouche flanked by two classical figures, and supported by two cherubs holding a swag of leaves and fruits; see Johnson, A.F. Catalogue of Italian engraved title-pages in the sixteenth century, page 4. In this second issue, Grassi's imprint is re-engraved on title page in roman capitals, and privilege of Pope Gregory XIII is printed in small italic type on verso of title-page, dated June 27, 1584 in the Basilica di San Marco in Rome
  • Comprises 35 engraved plates, numbered 2-36, of scenes of martyrdom of English saints; plates have lettered captions corresponding to lettered figures in the scenes
  • As described by Ruth Mortimer in Harvard College Library, Catalogue of books and manuscripts : Italian sixteenth century books (no. 125), plate 2 of second issue is similar to that in first state but by a different hand, with first line of caption ending in "Romae."

[Romae]: [Ex officina Bartholmaei Grassi], anno D[omi]ni M.D.LXXX III [1583]; and Descriptiones quaedam illius inhumanae et multiplicis persecutionis..... Romae: Apud Franciscum Zannettum, 1584. Bound in Middle Hill boards, as found on books bound for Sir Thomas Phillipps' library at Middle Hill, consisting of light tan paper over millboard, without pastedowns or other endpapers; rebacked; text block sewn on two cords, which are laced through the boards. Phillipps' typical manuscript shelf-mark on upper turn-in on upper board (combination of Roman numeral, lower case letter, and Arabic numeral): "IX.a.9." In slipcase half bound in brown morocco and brown paper. Purchase, Jeffrey Mancevice, 1995.
