Lupicini, military engineer, and hydraulic engineer for the city of Venice, came up with the idea of the "verghe astronomiche," a type of square rule or quadrant, composed of two rods joined together a one end, which by means of an attached compass and a third rod marked off in units corresponding to degrees, could be used to form angles for measuring long distances as well as heights
