Note
  • "The artist book is an artistic form in which 'leafing through' is the basic means of engagement between reader and artist. Through the artist's conception of a 'book space,' the form freely transforms and integrates literal reading, visual enjoyment, and materiality. Artists working in this form make full use of the qualities of text, of poetry and painting, or material choices like the feel of paper or ink. These books are made by artists who personally typeset, paint, print, and bind their works. This kind of art truly represents their persistent love for reading, printing, and the scent of ink...."--Curator's introduction, page 8
  • Catalog to accompany an exhibition of artists' books from around the world, made between 1913 and 2012, with a focus on innovative works of cutting-edge artists in this century and pieces by a few Chinese artists. In addition to the central exhibit, there are three satellite exhibitions: the first two, "Chinese Sources" and "European Sources" "revitalize book production workshops by showing extremely valuable Song Dynasty books and Ming Dynasty printing blocks, as well as sixteenth-century European hand-copied books on vellum...." The third, "Dreamland book Gallery," is a bookstore featuring zine-style publications, located in the Chinese Central Academy of Fine Arts (CAFA) Art Museum, which introduces the present and future of artist book creation;" see Curator's introduction, page 9
  • Includes three essays: "The Roots of the Matter" / Marshall Weber; "When Left to Their Own Devices: Meaning and Intention in the Modern Artists' Book" / Mark Dimunation; and "Zines Then and Today" / David Senior
