Note
  • Script: written in several different Gothic cursive hands
  • Illustrations: leaf 14 contains illustrations in brilliant watercolors of a float (recto) and costume (verso) used in Carnival of 1539. The floats took the form of ships on wheels or runners; the one depicted here carries a crew of revelers dressed like bears and jesters. The man portrayed on verso, dressed in a white costume decorated with stripes of gold and purple, and wearing strings of bells around each knee, brandishes a lance, and holds a "Lebensrute"--a cluster of leaves similar to an artichoke in appearance which held fireworks. Text is illustrated throughout with numerous smaller watercolor paintings of coats of arms
  • Binding: contemporary vellum boards stained bright orange; remnants of two pairs of gold cloth ties along fore-edges. Armorial bookplate on front pastedown of Franz Josef II, Prince of Liechtenstein ("Ex libris Liechtensteinianis")
  • Acquired from H.P. Kraus in 1964, as a gift of the Samuel H. Kress Foundation
