The published work represents only a portion of the larger work of 46 canti originally planned. Giraldi's conception of epic eliminates the notion of the unity of artistic structure. He specifically rejects the need for unity of action and replaces it with unity of hero. The life of Hercules is the only unifying element, aside from the general moralizing intent. Around this life Giraldi has gathered many "actions," some taken from ancient poets, some invented by himself
