McHenry discusses his boyhood years on the family's Lompoc farm until his appointment to University of California President Kerr's Statewide staff in 1958. Special emphasis is given to his student years at UCLA, his years as a professor and administrator at UCLA and to his experiences in California politics between 1932 and 1952. He continues with a discussion of the University of California system during the late 1950s and the philosophy, politics, and compromises involved in devising the Master Plan for Higher Education in California, reasons the state decided to add three new campuses to the UC system, and the events leading up to the selection of Santa Cruz as one of the sites. Major topics discussed include faculty recruitment and promotion policies, undergraduate students, administrative staff, and special schools and programs associated with UCSC.
