  • This essay preceded Derrida's book of the same title and was published in two succeeding issues of the journal Critique (no. 223, Dec. 1965 and no. 224, Jan. 1966). The first footnote in the book, published the next year, notes that it should be considered a development of this essay. Cf. p. 7 of Derrida, J. De la grammatologie, 1967
  • UCLA's copy is an official offprint from the publisher, wrapped in a cover indicating that the entire essay was included. This was one of the copies originally sent to Derrida, who then sent it to Susan Sontag with the note: "Pour Susan, Ce texte dont la suite visera[?] 'the anthropologist as hero' at 'the extreme formalism as a moral choice, and (... not surprisingly) a vision of social perfection'--Affectueusement, Jacques". In the original envelope, postmarked "15 11 66".
