Summary expansion
This is a page-for-page pirated reprint of the original edition--Wolfe has even used Scoto's Naples 1563 imprint--the counterfeit being easily recognizable by the substitution of a grotesque ornament on the title-page, in place of the arms of Philip II, and the presence in the text of a catchword on every page (Scoto used catchwords only on the last page of a quire). The work was also issued by Wolfe the same year with his own imprint, and new dedication to Henry Percy, Earl of Northumberland. Wolfe is well-known for having printed many counterfeit editions of Italian books, including pirate edition of Machiavelli and Aretino; see H. Sellers, "Italian Books Printed in England Before 1640," The Library, 4th series, V, no. 2 (Sept. 1924); H.R. Hoppee, "John Wolfe," The Library, 4th series, XIV, no. 3 (Dec. 1933); and D. B. Woodfield, Surreptitious Printing in England, 1550-1640 (New York; Bibliographical Society of America, 1973)
