Summary expansion
Lefèvre-Pontalis leaves T'bilisi on Feb. 9, and 36 hours later finds himself in Yerevan, where he makes a quick trip to the important pilgrimage site, the monastery Etchmiadzin. He describes the people--Armenians, Tartars, Persians--and the area around the Aras River and Mount Ararat. By Feb. 15 he is in Tabriz, capital of Azerbeijan. He arrives in Teheran on Feb. 24, where he is able to obtain an audience with the Shah. In Persepolis he visits the palaces of Darius, Xerxes, and Artaxerxès. Isfahan is home to two of the largest mosques of the world, as well as one of the largest and beautiful bazaars, and the Palace of the Four Columns. Lefèvre-Pontalis retraces his route back to Teheran, arriving March 14, and on March 17 sets out for Recht, the largest city on Iran's Caspian Sea coast, prosperous for its extensive trade with Russia. On March 22, in the nearby port of Enzéli, Lefèvre-Pontalis finally boards the Caspian sea ferry "Turkmène", operated by the Compagnie Caucase et Mercure, for Baku. The text is borrowed from lectures Lefèvre-Pontalis gave in 1894 in Vendome and Angers, and is illustrated with collotypes made from photographs taken by him, as well as by the explorer and archaeologist Jane Dieulafoy, Emile Charles Bernay, a French diplomat in Teheran, Marie Tiersonnier, wife of the marquis de Balloy, French minister plenipotentiary in Teheran, and others. Illustrations include a map showing Lefèvre-Pontalis' route
