  • First published in 1817, by the same publisher, Ambrose Henkel, son of Rev. Paul Henkel, a German Lutheran preacher, of New Market, Virginia. Henkel's press, established in 1806, was the first German language press operating south of the Mason and Dixon Line. He later sold the press to his brother, Solomon Henkel, around 1817
  • Woodcuts designed and cut by Ambrose Henkel, include title vignette of a teacher passing out work to one of his students; pictorial alphabet on frontispiece, containing 24 small animal woodcuts arranged in six rows of four, with captions below; contains 24-letter pictorial alphabet, with identifying captions below; another pictorial alphabet on p. 8-10
  • Text printed in German blackletter, on light blue paper; Henkel's homemade ink was made from lamp black, linseed oil, and boiled onions
  • Includes alphabets in fraktur, roman, and cursive types; word lists, lists of conjunctions, interjections, and verbs, glossaries, male and female names; Biblical passages; statements of faith such as the Apostolic Creed, and prayers for many occasions
