Summary expansion
According to the artist, she created the book as an interpretation of her visceral reaction to the stories of the type of torture administered to the prisoners held in these prisons, often punishments that would not leave physical scars, but were intended to drive a person insane, such as waterboarding, and keeping a person standing for hours. In one image, the physical wounds of the prisoner are stitched closed with actual thread

Note
  • Large format book with images measuring 18 x 24", printed in red and black, intended to be large and imposing, in contrast to the thin creased fragile-looking Nepalese paper on the cover that resembles human skin. The translucent Japanese paper on which the images are printed allows the reader to glimpse the shadow image of the previous image. The book is issued in a zippered cloth sack; the artist suggests that the zippered red mouth on the sack represents the beginning and end of the story: the torturer's lips are sealed
