Summary
A privately compiled collection of hand-colored ills. of actors and actresses in full costume for various roles; the ills. were probably culled from a collection published somewhere between 1816 to 1820 by Martinet et Cie. (one ill. [no. 433] has date, "L'an 1816"). The published collection has the title, Petite galerie dramatique, ou, Recueil de différents costumes d'acteurs des théâtres de la capitale. According to the description of this publication in Colas' Bibliographie général du costume et de la mode, the full collection consisted of engraved and colored plates, numbered from 1 to 1637. Of these, the first 557 plates bore the imprint of Martinet, with the address being 13 and/or 15 Rue du Coq in Paris; after that, the imprint also included the name, Hautecoeur. Towards the end of the numbers, some of the illustrations were lithographed and included the information, "Impr. J. Rigo". Colas mentions that the publisher drew from the earlier numbers of these ills. (usually 1 to 500 or 600) to make other series, notably one quite similar to this compilation, having the title, Costumes des acteurs et actrices de théatres de Paris dans leurs principaux rôles. (For more about the published work, see Colas, entry 2328). There are similarities in the present compilation to Martinet's actor series (for instance, most ills. have the name of the actor or actress, the role depicted, the title of the piece, a quote from the piece, including scene and act, the name of the theater involved, the name of the illustrator, and the name of the publisher). However, the present compilation differs because the ills. have numbers that reach as high as 1188 and are in completely random order among the 5 vols. The names of the illustrators given under the ills. include: Joly, Carle, Boullay, Dubois, Pitrot, Maleuvre, Duplessi-Bertaux and Chaponnier fils
